12 WCA Athletes to Compete Against National and Olympic Teams in World Trophy Cup

7th Annual FINA World Trophy Cup Synchronized Swimming Competition 2012, Tultitlan, Mexico, Nov 30 – Dec 2, 2012

• Team Routine Preview November 18th, Sunday at 3:30 p.m Diablo Valley College Pool in Pleasant Hill, CA (Free) •

12 athletes from the Walnut Creek Aquanuts (ages 15 to 19) will represent the United States at the FINA World Trophy Cup in Tultitlan, Mexico this month. The WCA team will be the youngest team entering this competition.

  • This is an elite synchronized swimming competition featuring the best athletes from the National and Olympic teams from Russia, Spain, Japan, China, Mexico and other countries.
  • Most athletes are high school students who train 4-5 hours each day yet are highly successful in their studies and are active contributors to the local communities.
  • World Trophy Cup attracts large crowds and TV audiences due to its unique focus on the beauty of synchronized swimming. In contrast to the Olympics, the scores are given for the artistic impression only. Also, in addition to the traditional panel of judges representing FINA, there is panel of judges made up of celebrities from the host country.
  • The routines are choreographed to themes reflecting the host country as well as each team’s own country.
  • There will be lifts and highlights (throwing girls high out of the water) as well as beautiful costumes and props.
  • The U.S. athletes are self-funding this trip due to budget cuts at USA Synchro. The costs include a $10,000 entry fee, flights to Mexico, coaches and costumes.
